Recently I received a few emails about ecu upgrades for the OBDII ecu for the 1996 ZTT. I did some digging and found there is an upgrade for the 96. I happen to be friends with one of the best ecu tuning shops in Japan and they have been tuning these ecu's for years. The 96's have a completely different style ecu than the previous years. Before '96 the tuning info was stored on a 28dip eprom which was easy to remove/copy/reprogram/install. In '96 the internals were changed and Nissan started using a (what I believe is) a plcc chip which isn't reprogrammable. The way around this is to desolder the stock chip and socket. Solder in a jumper board. Then the stock chip plugs into a socket on the jumper board and a programmable 28dip chip is also plugged into the jumper board. Now only the ecu can be tuned from that 28dip chip. Here are some pics:This is a Skyline GTR R33's ecu with the jumper board installed. The programmable chip has the Technosports sticker on it.
This is that ecu with an empty jumper board next to it. Note the empty sockets for the plcc chip and 28dip chip.

This is a close up of the bottom of the jumper board. The legs of the jumper board (lower right hand side) have to be soldered in place of the stock chip and socket.
A close up shot from the side.
Technosports is one of the most expensive tuning shops in Japan. Their shop car is a 1000hp 9.3 sec R33 Skyline GTR that runs on the stock MAF sensor, stock ecu, and stock spark plug coils - just their custom ecu tune. They do charge a premium but it is the best you can get. The price for the ecu conversion is $1100 with a tuned chip. If you upgrade your injectors or go to a twin intake they charge $200 for each successive ecu chip. Ideally I would like to get them to throw in one upgraded chip (850cc w/ dual intake) for free since my customers are in the US. I believe they would go for that. With a 850cc and dual intake chip, you would never need to upgrade....unless you went over 850rwhp :-)
Z from Japan CoolPhotos Guess where these are going....
